History

Hamel traces its roots back to the early 1960s, when J. Edward Hamel launched a career in multi-family construction after serving with the 82nd Airborne. During the ‘60s and early ‘70s, working as a project manager for Thomas P. Harkins, inc., Mr. Hamel handled all of the multi-family construction for the Rouse Company in the new town of Columbia, Maryland. He then founded and led a new division, named Harkins Commercial, Inc., in 1976. Hamel’s own company was incorporated in 1988.

Through the years, the company has steadily grown, acquiring long-term relationships with owners, partners and various agencies, both public and private. Mr. Hamel’s focus on improving both the financial and community performance of multi-family projects has become a hallmark of the firm.
