Mayfair Mansions Groundbreaking
Hamel Builders, along with Gilford Corporation, has broken ground
on the renovation of Mayfair Mansions apartments in historic
Southeast.
The 570 units will receive a full makeover to provide 410 affordable
rental units and 160 affordable condos adjacent to Kenilworth Aquatic
Gardens. In addition to the renovation work the property will be
receiving a new community center for residences.
The DC
Department of Housing provided $27.5 million in long-term subsidies
for the project - about 95% of the rental housing is restricted
for applicants at or below 60% AMI. The Federal government will
provide a Federal Historic Rehabilitation Tax Credit due to the
properties original purpose in the 1940s as an exclusively African-American
community designed by Albert Cassell. In 1990, Mayfair was put
on the historic register.
Design for the 23-acre, 570-unit community will be by Wiencek + Associates and McDonald Williams Banks Architects. Project completion is expected in the first quarter of 2010.

Maryland Affordable Housing Coalition Annual Meeting
Hamel Builders sponsors The Maryland Affordable Housing Coalitions' Annual Meeting on Monday, January 7, 2008, at the Marriott Inner Harbor at Camden Yards, 110 S. Eutaw Street, Baltimore.
The mission of the Maryland Affordable Housing Coalition (MAHC) is to increase the financial and technical resources available for developers of affordable housing in Maryland. Formed in Spring 2000, MAHC advocates for resources for affordable housing development through increased funding for established programs, such as the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development's (DHCD) Rental Housing Programs. In addition, MAHC believes in developing and promoting "best practices" in conjunction with the Maryland DHCD staff through frequent interactions and training.
Each winter, MAHC holds its annual membership meeting which provides up-to-date information on the current state housing programs and policies.
